The Spade was created in 2008 in Paris. The band was originally composed of Alex Kobs on the drums and percussion, Ben "Rudy" Flatstone on the bass guitar and back-up vocals, Clay Gombert on the guitar and Virgil MacBryde on the guitar and lead vocals. This formation toured the Paris clubs and concert halls for about a year, gaining some recognition and reaching the finals of the French national battle of the Bands: Emergenza.

In 2010, after a 5 months break, MacBryde approached William Watkins (former guitarist of Diced Aces) with a project for a concept album. He told him that he "saw it all in a dream" in July 2010. MacBryde and Watkins started composition of the JMT project (The Journey Of A Modern Tribesman).

In September of the same year, Watkins officially became a member of The Spade, assuring lead guitar alongside Clement Gombert. In October 2010 MacBryde & Watkins both left for the UK where they met French theater comedian Jay Carnero and comics illustrator Tim Travé, who would later do some artwork work for the band, both of whom they befriended. In February 2011 Jay Carnero effectively became the band's bass player around the same time clay Gombert left the band due to musical differences.

In March 2011 the band resumed regular rehearsals between Paris in London and pursued recording their songs, most songs where recorded in Virgil's Room in London or in William's flat in Paris. With a growing number of followers in both cities, mainly due to Campus radio airing of some of their songs in England and to social networks in Paris the band gave several live performances in both london and Cardiff between March and april. The band then gave several representations in Paris between May and July of this year and completed the recording of a 15 track demo for the JMT project around the end of August.

Les Spade se sont formés en 2008 à Paris. Le groupe était, à la base, formé de Alex Kobs à la batterie et percussion, Ben "Ruby" Flastone à la basse, Clement Gombert à la guitare et Virgil MacBryde à la guitare et au chant. Le groupe a fait des tournées dans les clubs et salles de concerts de Paris pendant environ 1 an, gagnant ainsi une certaine notoriété et arriver en final d'Emergenza.

En Septembre de la même année, Watkins devint officiellement membre des Spade, assurant le rôle de lead guitare au côté de Clement Gombert. En Octobre 2010, MacBryde & Watkins partirent pour le Royaume-Uni où ils rencontrèrent le comédien Jeremy Carnero et l'illustrateur de BD Tim Travé (Ce dernier s'occupera des illustrations du groupe). En Février 2011, Jay Carnero prit la position de bassiste au sein du groupe au même moment que Clement Gombert quitta le groupe pour raison de divergences musicales.

En Mars 2011, le groupe reprit des répétitions régulières entre Paris et Londres et continua l'enregistrement de l'album. La plupart des morceaux furent enregistrés dans des chambres étudiantes au Royaume-Uni, ou à Paris. Avec une croissance du nombre de followers dans les deux villes, surtout grâce aux radios campus, et réseaux sociaux du web. Le groupe fit plusieurs représentations live à Londres et à Cardiff, entre Mars et Avril. À cela s'ajoute les concerts à Paris entre Mai et Juillet 2011. Les Spade finirent le projet JMT, un album démo de 14 morceaux fin Août.
